Maxtel Callback Service

Frequently Asked Questions

MaxTel is a streamlined, fully functional international call-back service
designed to meet the needs of savvy international callers.

How Does it Work?
When you open a Maxtel account, we assign you a unique Access Number. When you want to use the service, just dial this number like you would any other number to the U.S.A. As soon as you hear a busy signal, hang up. You're not charged for that call because it's never actually answered. Our computer recognizes your Access Number and triggers a call-back to your phone. Once you answer your call-back, simply dial whichever telephone number you wish. Your calling session ends when you hang up your phone.

Do I Need any Special Equipment?
Maxtel works with any true touch-tone phone. But you don't have to have a touch-tone phone to take advantage of MaxTel savings. An inexpensive, pocket-sized tone dialer, available in any electronics store, turns any phone into a true touch-tone. Or you can request MaxTel's Voice-Activated dialing feature. Just speak your number into the phone and the MaxTel computer will connect your call (available in English and Spanish).

I don't have international direct dial service. Can I still use MaxTel?
Yes, you can. MaxTel is specially designed to accommodate people without direct dial service. All you need to do is call your local telephone operator and ask her/him to place a collect call for you to your Access Number. Upon dialing that number, s/he will hear a busy signal and tell you that the line is busy and to try your call later. When the operator hangs up, your return call will have been triggered and you will receive it seconds later. You can then dial the number you wish to reach.

Do I have to change my existing long distance carrier to use MaxTel?
No, using MaxTel does not affect your existing carriers in any way.

Can I Change the Number Where I receive a Maxtel callback?
Absolutely. MaxTel travels with you. You can use a phone to reprogram your location number (the phone number where you receive your call-backs) at any time. When you're staying in a hotel, you can even program MaxTel to ask for you by name and room number.

What About Customer Service?
Customer Support representatives are available every day of the week to answer your questions and solve any problems you may be having with MaxTel.

Can I use MaxTel if I am staying at a hotel or other place where all calls must go through a switchboard?
Yes, you most certainly can. All you would need to do would be to call Customer Service and have them set your account to Standard. With a Standard account, upon receiving your return callback, you will hear the prompt "Hello, I have a call for (your name)." You can even program your hotel room number so that the operator will be able to put your call through immediately. Upon receiving the call, press the # button on the phone and then you will hear the prompt "Enter the number you wish to dial now". Dial as usual (country code, city code, number).

Can I make more than one call without dialing the Access Number again?
Yes. If you want to make another call, press the # button on your phone twice (##). You will get a new dial tone and you can dial your next number.

Can I Expect Real Savings?
Yes. Our low international calling rates are guaranteed to save you money. Your call-back connects you to an open American phone line - and that's your connection to the world's most competitive long distance rates. We're in constant contact with the world's largest long distance carriers, negotiating the lowest rates possible without compromising the quality of your calls. All MaxTel calls are billed in tiny 6-second increments, with a 30-second minimum (except Mexico, which is billed in full minute increments). And our low rates are available 24 hours a day. So you save no matter when you make your calls.

Can I use MaxTel for my Business?
Of course. In fact, MaxTel makes a lot of sense if international calling is a critical part of your business. There's no limit on the amount of Access Numbers you can request. Multiple Access Numbers are a great way not only to save money, but to track your monthly phone expenses. You can assign access numbers to employees, and even to fax machines and cellular phones. At the end of each month you receive a single statement summarizing all your company's international calls by Access Number. You'll know exactly who called where and how much it cost.

How Do I Pay?
Paying is easy. MaxTel accepts all major credit cards, including American Express, Visa, MasterCard, Diners Club and JCB. Your card is automatically charged against monthly usage. At the end of each billing cycle, we mail you an itemized summary of your calls, listed by access number and including date and time, length and cost, telephone numbers where calls were made, and origin and destination.
